The closeness of the figures in Once Upon a Time was inspired by pleasant memories of my family and friends spending time together on the beach. We sang, talked, laughed, and enjoyed ourselves. I felt a powerful need to express the beauty of Syria and the Syrian people, as more recently the country has been burdened by associations of violence and misery. In Once Upon a Time 1, I wanted to show the figures in action – blending, interacting, and connecting with one another.
